Biography

Kevin Phillips
As a 37 year old composer, teacher, student and performer I am always looking for more venues to share my art with the world. I have studied classical piano since age 5, cello since age 11 and other various wind instruments in Jr. High and High school. In college I majored in composition, piano and cello at different times. I look forward to the day when I can get a music degree, and am considering applying at a school in Pennsylvania. I have been teaching music theory, piano and cello repertoire and technique since graduating high school in 2001. I have also been sought after for my piano skills at more than 10 churches, theater programs, public schools and universities since high school. I compose for strings (as a cellist), solo piano, woodwinds and brasswinds, full orchestra, as well as other chamber and vocal groups. I have performed on the piano the Grieg Concerto, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the 1st Shostakovich Concerto, and was principal cellist in the Sacramento Youth Symphony in 1999-2000. I have won various awards for my compositions including the Munchkin Suite (then was renamed Yosemite Suite) and have had arrangements performed for local Jr High USO shows and chamber orchestra groups. My inspiration comes from such composers as Leonard Bernstein, Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland, J. S. Bach, Sergei Rachmaninov, Sergei Prokofiev and Maurice Ravel. Please feel free to ask any questions about my original works or how to perform them.
